Lophophora

This photo gallery is dedicated to the genus Lophophora and represents an amendment to a biosystematic study of this genus (link_to_paper_after_publication). The Lophophora genus is widely known to the public due to L. williamsii, a species containing the psychoactive alkaloid mescaline. This species, commonly known as peyote, has been used by native people of different tribes from northern Mexico and the southern USA for many purposes, e.g., medicinal, socio-religious, or cultural, for centuries. For many native tribes, peyote became an integral part of their tribal heritage; it was also recognized by the US Congress, by the enactment of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, which allowed members of an Indian tribe to legally use peyote for traditional ceremonial purposes.

The Lophophora genus is characterised by a low level of morphological differentiation but high morphological plasticity of taxonomically important characteristics. Due to differing views on the taxonomical value of these features, the taxonomy of the genus is unclear. To clarify the taxonomy, number of recognized taxa, and their phylogenetic relationships, we performed a biosystematic study using molecular analysis (sequencing of nuclear and chloroplast loci) and analysis of mescaline content. The results showed that the Lophophora genus consists of five different species. The first species L. williamsii represents a morphological and genetic set of several related lineages, and reaches the largest distribution reaching from the southern USA (Texas) to central Mexico (San Luis Potosí). The remaining four species are morphologically and geographically well characterised and genetically unique. These are L. alberto-vojtechii, L. diffusa, L. fricii a L. koehresii.

Because most of the cactus species are included under the CITES, and their collection from natural localities is not possible without permission. Thus, we based this research on samples kept in private collections by many enthusiasts and horticulturalists specializing in cacti cultivation, especially in the genus Lophophora. Most of the samples represented plants cultivated from seeds collected in nature before the CITES was ratified. The important criteria for including samples in the investigation were the unambiguous origin of the plant material, confirming that the plants were not illegally gained or gathered from nature, and the possibility of identifying the geographic origin of the sample. The studied sample set covered nearly the whole distribution of the genus. To avoid damaging the cultivated plants, a piece of plant tissue was cut from the stem, or daughter offshoot was used. From the unused remnants of the samples, herbarium vouchers were prepared and stored in the herbarium of the Department of Botany (OL). However, because the herbarium voucher does not fully represent the morphological variability (in cacti), we created this photo gallery, which contains pictures of typical morphotypes from all the recovered localities. This gallery may serve for the verification of the species determination.
